Syllabus
Welcome to Physics. This class is intended for juniors and seniors. Since this is physics, ALGEBRA AND GEOMETRY are major components of the class. You will be required to complete nightly homework. If you are not attempting work outside the class then you are not learning and will not retain the material. If you are having a difficult time with a topic, please stop in and see me for help. If you are having a difficult time in the class expect a phone call home by me to inform your parents/guardians that you need some extra help.

Materials:
Every day you will need to bring to class:
- Textbook
- 3-ring binder or folder or … (with paper and ALL your notes!)
- there will be a lot of handouts
- pencils & erasers – no pens on homework, tests, quizzes, etc.!
- calculator (scientific)
- active brain cells

Generally, if you are not prepared for class, you will not be allowed to go to your locker to retrieve any forgotten items. During tests you may not share a calculator with another student!

Behavioral Guidelines:
POLICY: “Mutual respect is expected among person’s in the school,” and is the primary rule in this classroom. Be respectful of one another and be respectful of the teacher; you should also expect to be treated with respect by your fellow students and by your teacher. Your behavior in class should not interfere with your learning or anyone else’s learning.

Some specifics:
- When I am talking, you should not be; and when another student is talking, you should not be.
- When given time during class to work on homework, you must do just that.
- Food and drink are NOT allowed in the classroom. The only exception is that you may bring in water.
- We will be working in a lab setting several times during the semester. Safety is of the utmost concern. If there is horseplay in the lab you will be removed from all labs and receive a 0 (zero) for all labs.
- If you do something immature don’t be surprised if you are asked to leave the class and report to the dean’s office. This especially includes the language you use (vulgar, profane, obscene, or derogatory remarks included).

Homework, Tests, and Grading:
Percentages will be assigned letter grades as follows:
90 – 100 A
80 – 90 B
70 – 80 C
60 – 70 D
< 60 F

Your overall grade will be determined as follows:
40% 1st semester grade
40% 2nd semester grade
20% Final Exam

40% - Tests, 35% - Homework, 25% - Labs

Homework is a necessary part of the class and will primarily consist of reading, book work, work sheets, and problem sets. Labs that are done in class will often need to be completed at home as homework.

Tests will be worth many more points than homework. You will be required to complete tests in the class time provided. I recommend you study from the chapter’s homework assignments, since many questions are similar to homework problems.

Late work is not accepted. The only exception is if you are excused due to illness or a school related activity. You will have the same number of days to make up an assignment as you missed.

Make-up days for tests are every Friday before or after school in room 129, and make-up days for labs are generally on Thursdays before or after school (this may vary, so be sure to ask!)

If you are having trouble I will be available after school to meet with you. You can usually find me in Room 129 or in the Science office. If you need help before school you will need to come in before 7:20, because AP Physics begins at 7:25.

In order to be eligible for the field trip to Great America in May you must pass 1st semester with a C and be passing 2nd semester.

We may do some class projects, which are not funded by the Science Budget. They will require you to purchase some supplies (no more than $10.00 for the year.) However, Great America will cost approximately $33.
